Authors Daniel Bergner and Angie MOrgan to Speak in Traverse City

The National Writers Series, a nonprofit organization based in Traverse City, Michigan, is ready to reveal the first two authors appearing in the Summer 2022 season.

On June 2nd, we'll welcome New York Times Magazine writer Daniel Bergner for a discussion about his newest book The Mind and the Moon. That's followed on June 16th by a conversation with executive coach Angie Morgan about her newest book Bet On You: How to Win With Risk.

Both of these events will take place at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City. These conversations will focus on topics that we hope will have attendees walking away feeling more knowledgeable, better informed, and able to improve their lives in ways big and small.

"We are thrilled to have Daniel Bergner with us to share his story with us just a few days after Mental Health Awareness month. We're looking forward to a thought-provoking conversation with guest host Rick Coates," says Executive Director Amanda Ruud. "And June is a perfect time for a mid-year check-in on your goals and dreams, so we think hometown hero Angie Morgan is just the person we need to help us get back on track."

ABOUT DANIEL BERGNER

In the 1980s, author Daniel Bergner's younger brother was diagnosed as bipolar and was put into a locked mental health ward. Watching his brother's journey through the world of psychiatric treatment and medication informs his newest book, The Mind and the Moon, which raises profound questions about how we understand ourselves and the essential human divide between our brains and our minds.

We're going to talk about personal dignity, the terrifying choices confronted by families and patients, and the prospect of alternative treatments. If you know anyone who's suffered from mental illness (especially over the last couple years), you'll want to be here for this discussion.

Guest Host: Rick Coates, the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Grand Traverse.

ABOUT ANGIE MORGAN

Angie Morgan wasn't born a leader. She became a leader after enduring some of the toughest training on earth, earning her commission as a United States Marine Corps officer. That training helped build her leadership and risk-taking skills, which she's applied in her personal and professional life to achieve success.

Angie's newest book, Bet On You, is where she reveals her hard-earned, real-world insights that will help you realize your potential by enacting risk in ways most meaningful to you. How does risk really work? What is risk's true relation to reward? Attendees should arrive ready to discover how you can manage two major risk-killing emotions: fear and failure.

Guest Host: Coco Champagne, Chief Operating Officer for The Hagerty Group.
