At Fresh Perspective, we continue to discover and be introduced to incredible stories of innovators, creatives and artists thriving in communities all across the Fresh Coast State. It is our mission to shine a light on the work they are doing. introduce you to new projects, artistic endeavors and thoughtful works being created in the State of Michigan. That’s why we are launching a series of introductions to artists in Michigan titled “In The Artist Studio,” and we kick-off with an introduction to Moira Maloney, a Lansing-based artist working out of the Cedar Street Art Collective.

Maloney, b. 1991, is an interdisciplinary artist who works with mixed media, video, and performance. They are interested in the relationship between power and digital media and the failed promises of techno-optimistic visions of the future.

Maloney’s work throws common symbols associated with a digital culture into disorder. By representing the digital through the use of analog materials and the analog digitally, they try to question the novelty and promises of ubiquitous technologies. Another strategy that Maloney uses in their work involves simulating power and the way it determines our lives while subtly pointing to power’s failures. Their work often also makes use of what they refer to as “meta-performance,” of the way our mundane and computer-saturated lives are made possible by our indifference to oppression.

Maloney received a BFA from Michigan State University in Studio Art with a minor in Graphic Design and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Sculpture with an elective in Photography. They have also taught at Michigan State University, and are now creating work out of the Cedar Street Art Collective in Lansing, an Opportunity Arts Affiliate. Maloney has attended workshops at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO and The Periplus Project in Mani Peninsula, Greece in 2019.

Moira’s work has been featured in Barbed Magazine and Psychic Garden Magazine, and shown at The Sculpture Center, Capital City Film Festival, Forum Art Gallery, Kresge Art Center and Lansing Art Gallery.
