DIA Partnership to Bring Mural to Mount Clemens

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has partnered with the City of Mount Clemens and the Macomb County Art Institute Authority to create the latest Partners in Public Art project (PIPA), a community-driven mural on the side of the fire station on Dickinson Street in Mount Clemens.

The DIA’s PIPA program aims to foster collaboration between local communities and the museum, to strengthen and celebrate these communities through art. Each project is created in partnership with the community, the DIA, and a local artist. Projects are funded by generous community investment in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ millage, passed by the voters, for the purpose of enriching the quality of life in Macomb County.

For each project, the museum’s studio staff works with community partners to create and distribute a survey to local residents to garner input and ideas that can be incorporated into the final piece. Surveys for the Mount Clemens project havebeen completed.

In addition to the survey sent by the museum, the city of Mount Clemens plans to collaborate with the Anton Art Center to schedule in-person listening sessions to help collect opinions about the content of the mural on Wednesday, May 25 at 6pm at the Anton Art Center, 125 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens MI 48043. The event is open for all who are interested in attending.

Once community input has been gathered, the DIA will work to find a regional artist to bring the ideas of the community to life. The project is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.

Every community in Macomb County is eligible for a public art mural. Communities can create a submission to be considered for next year’s mural communities at http://dia.org/pipa.

About Partners in Public Art (PIPA)

The DIA’s Partners in Public Art program helps residents explore their sense of community through a collaborative design and creation process, producing works of public art that express the unique stories and interests of each community. This project is fully funded by generous community investment in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ millage, passed by the voters, for the purpose of enriching the quality of life in Macomb County.

The DIA and the Macomb County Art Institute Authority partner with two Macomb County communities each year on public mural projects. This year the communities are Mount Clemens and St. Clair Shores. Murals have been completed in Bruce Township, Eastpointe, Macomb Township, Sterling Heights, Utica, and Warren.

Every community in Macomb County is eligible for a public art mural. Communities can create a submission to be considered for next year’s mural communities at http://dia.org/pipa.
